When I wrote about Maryam Mirzakhani, the first female Fields medalist, I didn’t expect that only four months later we’ll have to say goodbye to her… Yesterday this 40-year-old professor died after a battle with breast cancer.
It’s a great loss not only for mathematicians working in the fields of complex geometry and dynamical systems, but also for the whole scientific community. She was an inspiration for many girls dreaming of a career in mathematics. I bet that she also blazed a trail for fellow Iranian scientists who want to work an their research abroad. Finally, she was also a wife, a mother, a daughter and a friend, so my condolences and sympathy go to her family and friends.
Maryam, you definitely won’t be forgotten!
